Search results course unit

The search for course units is possible either in the range of “Courses” or by “Time and Place”.

The search for course units is only possible in released semesters. Released means that the schedule has been finalised and published. Students and doctoral students are informed by e-mail when the schedule is released.

As a rule, the same course units are found in the search as in the Course Catalogue.

Course units cannot be registred for via myStudies if they consist of courses that are not offered in the corresponding semester. One reason may be that the courses are offered every two years. This is indicated in the Course Catalogue.

In the case of a new matriculation, it is possible that no registration is possible after enrolment because the timetable for the corresponding semester has not yet been released.

The search for learning units can be restricted using various criteria.

The search by semester, department and degree programme is preset by default under the range of Courses. When searching by Time and place, the semester and degree programme are preset. By clicking on the Reset button, these predefined criteria can be reset and the search can be carried out in the entire Course Catalogue for the relevant semester or restricted with other criteria.

The semester cannot be adjusted in the search. The semester must be adjusted on the Course registration page in the dropdown for the semester selection.

The blue fields offer a list for selecting search criteria (e.g. section or type). The white fields are free text fields. Here the search can be conducted either by entering text (e.g. course unit or lecturer) or digits (number). The number of ECTS credits can be set using a slider.

The search is started by clicking on the Search button.

If the search is restricted with too many criteria, it is possible that no result will be displayed.

No course units found

If the Search result without structural information is ticked, every course unit will be listed only once instead of several times with the details of the respective programme. This information can instead be seen in the detailed view of the learning unit under Offered in.

To register for a course unit the checkbox of the desired course unit in the search result is ticked. The course unit is then added to the course registration by clicking on the Add marked course units button. The course unit now appears on the Course registrations page in the corresponding semester.

Register for course unit

For repeating students: If only a part of a course unit is to be attended (e.g. only the lecture), the course unit can be registered and afterwards the unattended course (e.g. exercise) can be deleted from the course registration. If the last course of a course unit is deleted, the registration for the course unit is also automatically deleted.

If the performance assessment for the course unit has already been passed or if not all courses for the selected course unit have been registered, the message is displayed that the course has already been registered. Course units are displayed with those courses that are not yet on the enrolment list (remaining courses).

If these courses would like to be registered for, the registration is confirmed by clicking on the “Yes” button.

Confirm course registration

If the checkbox is not displayed and the registration is not possible, this may be due to the following reasons:

  • The course unit is marked with a red square with a white exclamation mark. In this case, the course registration is restricted. The restriction can relate to primary target groups, to a number of places, to a registration period or to internal students (e.g. auditors and special students are not permitted).
  • Course units with a black square cannot be registered by special students and auditors themselves. Special authorisation from the lecturer is required. The registration is carried out by the Registrar's Office and is only carried out once this authorisation has been obtained.
  • The course unit was generally blocked for registrations.
  • The course unit can only be taken by students who have been definitively admitted. This means students who do not have any additional requirements, who have fulfilled the additional requirements and who have a final academic record (from the Bachelor's studies). This requirement must be met in order to register for many Master's theses.
  • The course unit can only be taken if it is listed in the additional requirements of students.

Restrictions on course registrations are displayed for the corresponding course unit.

  • Red exclamation mark: Course units with restrictions on registration are marked with a red exclamation mark. By clicking on the icon, the details are displayed.
  • Start and end of registration: The registration of course units may only be possible from a certain date and/or only until a certain date.
  • Limited number of places: If all course places are taken, the course registration will first be placed on a waiting list. After registering, it displays Place xx on waiting list in brown under the title of the course unit.
  • Primary target groups: Students who are required to attend this course unit have priority. Students who do not belong to this primary group may not attend the course unit.
  • Or students who do not belong to the primary group are initially placed on a waiting list even if places are still free. Free places are allocated according to a student’s position on the waiting list. Students are notified by e-mail if they may participate.
  • All persons are placed on a waiting list upon registration. A special selection procedure is then carried out by the responsible persons.
  • Waiting list expiry: The waiting list is only maintained up to a certain deadline, usually just before lectures begin. Afterwards, it is cancelled and students are informed by e-mail.

Any combination of these restrictions on course registration is possible. The conditions are listed in each case under the course unit to be registered.

For supervised courses (semester projects/papers, Bachelor’s or Master’s theses), the responsible supervisor must be selected in a separate step.
